Saint Helices P2C, intaglio print, 12" x 9" plate, 20" x 16" paper, ed. 30, 1996. A limited number of prints are available.
In this print I made an effort to adhere to the color scheme and light effects of the Saint Helices paintings of this period. All three of the colored versions of the Saint Helices prints are produced by a "multiple-plate" process.
Once the image is etched onto a metal plate (a process of several weeks in this case) the plate is inked with black ink, placed on the bed of a press. A sheet of paper is laid over the plate and it is run through the press which essentially stamps the image into the surface of the paper. The first run through the press creates the monochromatic black and white image. Then, the paper is partially lifted so that the initial plate can be removed and then replaced by a second "color" plate which is inked with the various colors of the composition. The paper is laid back down over the color plate and rolled back through the press melding the monochromatic image with the color scheme.
I engineered the color plate for this print to disassemble into 12 individual pieces which could be inked separately with different colors. Then the pieces were reassembled as a complete plate and run through the press applying the colors in the exact location which I desired on the monochromatic black and white image.
