Saint Helices 79, 10" x 10", gouache on paper, 1999. Private collection.

The "underlying visual scheme" devised in version 78 carried over to this version in the form of a more geometric background and its interplay with the Saint Helices edge forms. I devised a singled multi-plane geometric form (detail at right) with differing hues of color denoting the individual planes and their directional orientation. I designed this hyper-geometric form to perform a figure/field reversal as an individual form. Having accomplished this, I designed a repeating network of this form which covers the entire picture plane upon which the edge forms were drawn and painted. Now the entire background of the composition changes perspective optically as a network performing the figure/field reversal of the singular hyper-geometric form.
