Saint Helices 61 & 62, 24" x 18", oil, acrylic, assemblage on panel, 1995. Artist's collection
I had the idea to create a composition wherein the viewer would be presented with two radically disparate compositions simultaneously within the formal and conceptual stratagem of the Saint Helices composition. I painted two separate compositions on two separate sheets of paper--one in red tones with absolutely vertical elements, and one in green tones with absolutely diagonal elements. Having completed these two separate compositions, I stenciled the Saint Helices drawing over each one and proceeded to cut them into pieces--like puzzle pieces--with a razor knife. Then, on two separately prepared panels I affixed the pieces of the disparate compositions--interspersing the two compositions in an alternating fashion. The edge forms were painted separately and applied (in a raised fashion) last. Version 61 is toned with a violet glaze and has yellow-toned edge forms. Version 62 is toned with a yellow glaze and has violet edge forms.
