Saint Helices 51, 40" x 30", acrylic on canvas, 1993. Artist's collection.

One could say that all of the Saint Helices compositions are "process-oriented" in the sense that they are engineered to some degree. This version was planned and executed utilizing more steps in the process than any version before. The first step being an abandoned attempt to combine black and white abstract expressionism and Renaissance glazing techniques--a process I would later perfect in version 59. Then I covered the surface by "rendering" the forms in low relief with a palette knife and modeling paste. Then I painted the chiaroscuro effects of the composition in black and white expressionistic brush strokes. Then I glazed in the standard colors to the appropriate areas of the composition including the reflected colored light on the edge forms.
