Saint Helices 5, 10" x 7", acrylic on paper, 1989. Artist's collection.
I lessened the angle of the bias of the central edge forms. I gave the edge forms more of a curved appearance, and oriented the black ellipses to exactly align with the edge forms. I tried rendering the edge on the upper ellipse form to a more oblique angle to the flat surface of the ellipse. This adjustment gave the ellipse a "saucer", or, "eye", appearance. I believe I was both intrigued, and, mystified by the upper ellipse form. In the following version it would all but disappear, and the lower black ellipses would disappear completely in deference to a new element added to the composition.
