Saint Helices 49, 40" x 30", oil and acrylic on canvas, 1993. Artist's collection.

In this version I return to the original design. This version was painted in acrylic in 1993 but was largely reworked in oil in 1996. The articulation of the lower-central area of the composition began as a passage of black and white abstract brush strokes, then overlaid with a grid pattern of square geometric shapes, and finally painted over with a randomly conceived lattice of brush strokes within which I glazed areas of red, yellow, and blue pigment to simulate a stained-glass effect. The edge forms reflect the local ambient light from nearby, or adjoining areas of the composition.
