Saint Helices 47, 16" x 12", watercolor, 1992. Artist's collection.
In this version there is an unusual combination of full range monochromatic value scales (the edge forms), and full range color passages (the surrounding areas), both presented as integral aspects of the composition, yet separated into distinctive compositional forms and schemes. At this point I knew that there was a change of routine impending--new home, new studio, all told, a new chapter of life in the offing. This version, for all of its uncharacteristically saturated color, is metaphorically an autumn leaf changing color visually announcing its own organic degeneration after a season of abundant energy and growth--the degree of which I could not imagine.
Eventually, a new season of surprising energy and growth began for the Saint Helices series. The works which forged this new evolutionary path are exhibited in the Middle, Late, and Present Saints gallery.
