Saint Helices 3, 5" x 5", acrylic on paper, 1989. Artist's collection.
In this composition I reversed the orientation of the edge forms from the previous compositions. And for all the Saint Helices compositions, this is the only version wherein the edge forms are oriented in this manner. I also discovered that two very intriguing things that happened when I placed an edge form on what was previously the white ellipse form. What had previously been a flat white ellipse was now a more dynamic element of the painting. It now participates in the illusionistic program of the composition. The ellipse is a disk floating in space, or, it is a hole in a three-dimensional form through which is revealed another space.
Eureka.
