Saint Helices 14, 8" x 6", watercolor, 1992. Artist's collection.
Each of the four delineated "areas" of the composition are distinct from one another in their formal character, as well as distinct in their dimensional character--as is the case with any landscape painting that groups disparate elements such as sky, earth, vegetation, human/animal forms, architecture, geography, and time, together on the picture plane.
This is the first Saint Helices composition wherein I conceptually mark the passage of time by positioning a single star within the halo configuration of stars to represent the movement of time. The far halo signifies a three o'clock position. The next halo signifies a six o'clock position--and so on.
