Saint Helices 12, 8" x 6", watercolor, 1992. Private collection.

I began to work again on the Saint Helices series once my transition from the U.S. to my new home in Canada was complete. My pursuit of the idea in painted form had been suspended for nearly a year. However, during that year I did continue sketching and writing about the idea in preparation for the time when my work could resume in full.

Once the studio work resumed, I returned to the composition on a smaller scale, and switched to using watercolor as a medium exclusively. From this point forward there would be no more questions about the basic forms of the composition, or, their orientation to the picture plane. This would be (unbeknownst to me at the time) the basic Saint Helices composition for the next seventy versions to come.
