Painted Wood Sculpture, 36" x 36", acrylic on plywood, 1981. Museum collection.
This is a three-dimensional painted wood sculpture produced at roughly the same time as the first paintings seen previously. I cut the circles out of 1/2" plywood, then mounted the pieces in a stacked fashion. The surface is about 3" deep at its highest point in the center. The blue circles are painted in an ascending tonal scheme modulating from the back of the composition to the front. The orange circles were devised as a color counter balance to the monochrome scheme of the blue circles. The holes cut in the front-most circles reveal the physical depth of the stacked composition.
