Sequence/Circumstance, 22" x 28", acrylic on paper, 1985. Artist's collection.
One sphere is operating on a field of random binary patterns of "x"s and "o"s. The other sphere is rendered similarly, on a similar field of binary sequences, but a third "z" factor arrests the sequence of the binary pattern on the right. The pattern is restarted with the same inexplicable result of the appearance of the "z". The blue area on the left represents the more mundane realm of "if,...then...." scenarios which comprise human thought and perception. The red-violet area on the right represents a similar pattern arrested in its mundane course of logic by an unforeseen inspiration, or, revelation. The left side of the composition represents the mundane realm of human thought, and the right side represents original, creative, thought.
