Bent Rigidity, 22" x 28", oil and acrylic on paper, 1985. Artist's collection.

This obvious departure from the formulaic progression of the previous eight paintings in this gallery still carries remnants of the spheres and grid. The square and circle shapes are most apparent in the form in the upper right quadrant of the composition. There are curvilinear passages combined with hard angled and straight linear shapes which also make illusions to the circle and square forms. There is also a sense of compartmentalization about this abstract composition which alludes to the sensibility of a grid plan. The two similar offset and opposing "spike" forms which appear from the top and bottom of the picture plane are spatially oriented in such a way as to suggest that they are moorings--linear remnants from a degenerated grid from which the central abstract shape has slipped free.
