Portrait Of Bret Ancel, 24" x 18", conte on paper, 1983. Artist's collection.

Bret, at the time that he and I were friends, defied superlatives in terms of how one might describe his energy, sense of humor, and talent as an actor. I favor this sketch of Bret because it captures a degree of the inquisitive/defiant nature of his character that I enjoyed. He is sizing-up a situation with one eye and outsmarting the situation with the other--head turned, leading with his jaw. He eventually became a Buddhist monk and still is, and I became an artist. We are still connected by spiritual vocations.
