Blue Figure, 42" x 24", acrylic on paper, 1986. Artist's collection.

This image is a detail (24" x 20") of Blue Figure's surface. I am showing this detail to emphasize my comments on the process by which this image came about. This image, as was the case with the previous Figure Fog image, revealed itself out of the random brushwork that I was applying to the surface. The head and chest of this figure is more of a "Rorschach"--the ink blot test in psychological analysis--than the completely modeled form in Figure Fog. I spotted this figure through the random matrix of brushwork and found it both quite disturbing and intriguing. Creative intuition is closely linked to the realm of one's unconscious thoughts. This image is a product of my pursuit of a genuinely intuitive creative process.
