Before, During, After, 12 x 12, acrylic on board, 1989. Private collection.

The large multi-panel abstractions ended with In Our Angelhood, yet here I am still working with the concepts of light, time, and space. A naturalistic play of light is asserted most specifically by the modeling of the two narrow blue-green forms. Light is reflected by the flat circular form, and is altered again by the presence of the red shadow. Ironically, the red shadow suggests that the flat circular form is actually a three dimensional sphere. There are more ambiguous and calculated spatial relationships operating within the composition. The exact scale and spatial orientation of the narrow blue-green forms is ambiguous. However, on the surface of the picture plane itself, the exact distance between the angled edges of the blue-green forms is equal to the diameter of the circle form. The presence of such exactitude in terms of the scale of two complementary visual elements--the negative space between the blue green forms and the positive circle shape--creates an implicit visual scenario wherein the implicit movement of the object through space and time is apparent.
