Bearman Woods, 22" x 28", conte on paper, 1982. Private collection.
Bret and I shot Bearman photos in rural settings, and in the city. This drawing is a back view of The Bearman walking through a stand of saplings. Bret changed his costume from the satin Nehru jacket to a shirt and tie, baggy trousers, overcoat, and wing-tip shoes--think "Bladerunner" style, rumpled film noir chic.
This composition captures The Bearman interacting with nature metaphorically as both a creature of nature--a bear figure, and as a foreigner to nature--a "cloaked" human figure. The arrangement of saplings create an interesting stage-set effect. The branches above The Bearman's head take on the form of a single antler. There is also a small configuration of branches at the right of the figure which gesturally mirror the head and right shoulder forms of the central figure as though there is an element of formal acquiescence between The Bearman's form, and the forms of nature as he passes through this environment.
